Eye exams is a procedure to evaluate the functions of the eye that provide normal vision. Namely, how the size, shape, and color of objects are perceived, as well as their location relative to each other. Eye exams are necessary for the timely detection of abnormalities and successful correction. Eye exams include accurate determination of the patient's visual acuity and refraction, intraocular pressure measurements, microscopic examination of the eye (biomicroscopy), pachymetry (corneal thickness measurement), echobiometry (eye length determination), ultrasound eye examination (B-scan), computer keratotopography and thorough retinal (eye fundus) examination with a wide pupil, tear production level determination and detailed visual field examination of the patient. Various methods are used to test vision, the results of which allow the doctor to identify abnormalities and prescribe a correction.

I had an absolutely wonderful experience with Family Optometry of Irvine. I went there initially because they are a retailer (one of the very few) of Randolph Engineering frames. Despite it being an almost three hour drive each way for me, it was absolutely worth every minute of SoCal traffic. They contacted me in advance to make sure they had the frames in stock I wanted to try on because they knew I was driving a long way. It wasn’t just a quick—in and out—exam like I’m used to at other optometrists, either; the doctor spent a long time discussing all the different facets of my eye health and answered all my questions. I had very specific and unusual lens requirements (brown photochromatic mineral glass), and they were able to find a lab that could custom make them for me. I also decided on a very specific frame configuration that they were able to special order. They were very patient with me and my many requests and kept me updated throughout the process. This is the first pair of glasses I’ve ever had that are simply perfect. I can’t say enough positive things about Family Optometry of Irvine. I’ll never go to another optometrist.

Everyone was very nice and helpful! I have medi-cal and was a bit worried about the glasses selection I’d have available but the glasses they had were awesome! Will definitely be recommending them to my family.

Very good experience with my visit, the doctors and service person are very polite and patient. They explain clearly my eye exam result and provide me good advices on how to select glasses. Would love to go there again next time.
